Liquid-liquid phase transition in Stillinger-Weber silicon
نویسنده
چکیده
It was recently demonstrated that the Stillinger-Weber silicon undergoes a liquidliquid first-order phase transition deep into the supercooled region (Sastry and Angell, Nature Materials 2, 739 (2003)). Here we study the effects of perturbations on this phase transition. We show that the order of the liquid-liquid transition changes with negative pressure. We also find that the liquid-liquid transition disappears when the three-body term of the potential is strengthened by as little as 5 %. This implies that the details of the potential could affect strongly the nature and even the existence of the liquid-liquid phase. This paper extends our earlier studies of free energy functions of density and crystalline order parameters for models of supercooled water, which allows us to examine the possibility of two distinct metastable liquid phases [D. T. Limmer and D. Chandler, J. Chem. Phys. 135, 134503 (2011) and preprint arXiv:1107.0337 (2011)]. Low-temperature reversible free energy surfaces of several different ...

In recent years, computer simulations have found increasingly widespread use as powerful tools for studying phase transitions in wide variety of systems. In the particular and very important case of aqueous systems, the commonly used force-fields tend to offer quite different predictions with respect to a wide range of thermodynamic and kinetic properties, including the ease of ice nucleation, ...
متن کاملInvestigation of the order continuum in the evolution of quenched Silicon using accelerated Molecular Dynamics techniques
The thermodynamic, electronic and structural properties of silicon phases are inextricably linked to the underlying order in the material. While the crystalline and amorphous phases are well characterized, the existence of a glassy silicon phase is unknown as the quench rate ‘window’ available to experiments is too low to observe this material, except perhaps transiently. Our interest lies in c...

The objective of this research is to develop an accurate numerical method to be used in showing the deformation of a liquid fuel droplet in a convective field. To simultaneously solve the internal liquid droplet flow field as well as the external gas phase flow field, a nonstaggered rectangular grid system without any coordinate transformation is used. Transition from the gas field to the liqui...

Within the inherent structure thermodynamic formalism introduced by Stillinger and Weber [Phys. Rev.
